I, Gabrielle White, do not “fall in love.”
I do not allow for any distractions that might derail me from my ambitions.
I do not let myself identify too closely with any romantic relationship.
I do not drop my walls to foster a relationship that, at my age, is likely liminal.
And I certainly don’t let the tides of emotion overrun my willpower. Nope, not me.
I do not hum the lyrics to cheesy love songs when I walk to class.
I do not plan my day around making someone else dinner.
I do not enjoy giving up any of my personal freedom. Certainly not.
But here I am, peeling this orange with the biggest grin on my face. I have no reason to smile and every reason to smile… so for now I think I’ll just keep smiling.
I recognize this… it’s from Vogue Korea in 2007, which I picked up in Seoul visiting my dear friend Yena. A lovely issue— and I think I still have it packed away somewhere!
